What is the best iron on transfer paper?
There are different types of transfer paper for different situations. Some are suitable for use with an iron, and some aren’t; some are suitable for use with a heat press, and some aren’t.
In this post we’ll take a look at the best iron on transfer paper. This transfer paper is best applied with an iron or EasyPress.
Best Iron On Transfer Paper
The best craft transfer paper in my opinion is Avery!
You can use these transfer papers for:
- home crafts
- gifts for friends and family
- cool custom clothing for yourself
However, iron on transfers like we’re talking about here are not really suitable for sale. The t-shirts I have made with iron-on transfer paper have all lasted well, and looked great, but the quality is not overwhelming (if you know what I mean)!
The quality of the printed image will also depend on the quality of your inkjet printer. I’ll share a few of the best printers for inkjet transfers at the end of this post.

Avery is a trusted brand and their product is as good as it gets. The pack comes with great instructions and the Avery website has all sorts of support available (chat, phone, email).
The product is easy to use, and most importantly, it works! I’ve used this myself and had great results. For an iron on transfer paper for dark t shirts, it’s great.

Best Transfer Paper For Inkjet Printers
So there you have it – Avery is the best inkjet iron on transfer paper. If you are using a quality heat press machine (such as a US made machine), there are much better transfer papers out there. But if you’re using an iron, an EasyPress, or a cheap heat press, I’d go with Avery Transfer Paper.
If you are also looking for an inkjet printer for iron on transfers, I can recommend Epson Workforce Printers. There are many machines in the Workforce series, and you can simply pick the one in your preferred price range. If you were interested, I have been using the Workforce WF-2630 for a couple of years now, without any issues (other than the ink running out too quickly)!

Hi, Im just starting a small business that will be needing a printer for vinyl iron on decals (for childrens clothing) and removable decals for MDF plaques. Which printer would you recommend for a start off business that isnt too expensive, but will give a quality image. Also, would cutting machine would you recommend? I was looking at some sort of cricut machine? Im in Australia. Thank you
Hi Brooke! Congrats on the start-up, that’s so exciting! For machines – I’d go with the Cricut Maker as it will give you tons of optionality. I know you’re planning on decals and plaques for now but who knows where your business could go! For the printer it sounds like you’ll want to purchase a sublimation printer. The Epson WorkForce series or Ecotanks are the most budget friendly. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I have used different kinds of Transfer paper and I loved it but it left the transfer feeling stiff even after washing several times. I bought Avery’s brand but I haven’t used any of them yet. I have a Cricut Explore Air 2 and I love the way it feels. I can’t even tell it wasn’t screen printed. It feels so natural. I was just wondering if the Avery transfer paper leaves the stiff feeling. Please advice, I do have some photos I can’t do with vinyl. I would like to know more about the Avery brand.
Hey there, Avery paper isn’t stiff. You can certainly tell that it is there, but it’s flexible and reasonably thin!

Hi Beverly, another method of decorating your school uniforms might be better. I imagine they will be worn and washed everyday or two, and basic transfer paper may not stand up to this level of use. If you only have an iron for heat application, you should try and talk with a local print shop to get their advice.
